Shooting naked men is all very well…

… but flowers don’t talk back.

Friends, I have launched a fundraising campaign in the form of a crowdfunding pitch on Indiegogo.  The purpose of the campaign is to cover the costs of printing, framing and mounting my artwork in preparation for an exhibit.  have a look:

My flower photography smashes the usual “tasteful” tropes of the genre to achieve big scale and shimmering energy; it’s “…the force that through the green fuse drives the flower” made manifest.

And I’m fortunate to have been given a chance to show it off.  My FIRST SOLO EXHIBIT of my frenetic florals opens at Akasha Art Projects, 511Church St, Toronto, the evening of February 20th, and runs through March 15th.    And you, dear reader, can be part of the excitement for as little as $5 while achieving art philanthropist status.

Be assured that, however you choose to help, I will be indebted to  you.

Hello, stranger…

The self-portrait is a common trope in painting and photography.   It is interesting to consider how and why any particular artist portrays him/herself.

I’ve been focusing almost exclusively on my still life and floral photography (check out flowerphotography.ca if you’re interested in what I’m up to there).   But male photography is still part of my repertoire – and I have various ideas percolating and gestating and… all other kinds of roiling, bubbling descriptors.

What better way to study decay and senescence than to examine myself?  I have a project which will be taking me several years to complete.  I’m documenting the changes in my body as I age.  The first review of this will be in 2015, when I’m sixty.  Until then, I’m taking weekly self-portraits.  It is a kind of super-slow and extended meditation on mortality and morbidity.

This one was taken on my 56th birthday.

Dmitri: Locker Room

Dmitri in the locker room

Spent a very pleasant Saturday morning watching Dmitri lift weights and generally do the gym thing.  Afterwards, we spent some time in the locker room… but will he drop the towel?  More (but not all) will be revealed.

Dmitri at Kew Beach

Dmitri, Kew Beach

It’s been way too long since I updated the blog.  What can I say, I’ve been busy with portraits and headshots, but not so many hunky (semi-)nude guys.  Sigh.  I hope to change that before the summer is out!

Dmitri came back after making some improvements, if you can believe it,  to his body.  I gilded this particular lily by dragging him to Kew Beach at 6AM on a muggy July Saturday.  Just wanted to see that early morning glow hit those pecs…
